Why Moms Want The Perspective of a Therapist
Being a parent is really, really hard. I describe it as the most physically and emotionally demanding thing I’ve ever done. Each day, I”m faced with a new challenge as a parent, and even though I’m a mom’s mental health expert, I don’t always know what to do. Additionally, my role as a parent impacts every single part of my life. Becoming a mom changed the way I work outside of the home, increased the work I do inside of the home, and decreased my capacity for self-care.
As moms, we each have limited amounts of time, energy, and effort. This means we don’t always have time to find solutions to our problems, and when we do, we often don’t hold ourselves accountable for making the changes we need to make for our own + our family’s wellbeing.
Therapy offers moms support with all of these things. It’s an act of self-care. It’s a space for you to be honest. It’s a great environment to solve problems, seek advice, and come up with solutions. It’s a relationship that offers caring and healing energy. And it’s a great way to be held accountable for making changes under the expert guidance of a trained mental health professional. So what’s holding moms back from taking advantage of the benefits of therapy?
The Problems with Therapy for Moms
As a therapist for moms, I believe in the power of therapy. Therapy is an invaluable tool that I’ve used to make changes to my routines and habits, and I see the way therapy helps moms every single day. But I also know that therapy isn’t a good fit for every mom - especially right now. Why?
Therapy requires an ongoing time commitment. Moms usually begin with attending therapy for 60-minutes each week for at least a couple of months. Then, once you start to feel better, you and your therapist figure out the best ongoing therapy schedule. If you’re a busy mom who doesn’t have time in your schedule, this time commitment may not be possible.
Therapy requires a financial investment. Therapy for moms is often expensive. Many people who attend therapy find that it is worth the financial investment, but being able to make that investment requires having flex funds in your budget. Many moms don’t have access to the money needed to make this investment.
Finding a therapist for moms is difficult. There is a major shortage of therapists, generally, and an even greater shortage in therapists to specialize in supporting moms. This means that you may not be able to find a therapist to work with and/or may spend months waiting on a therapist’s waiting list. In the meantime, you are not getting the support with your needs.
Therapy isn’t the right venue for you. Many moms are not interested in working with a therapist, There are infinite reasons for this, but I’ll share the most common reasons. For some moms, it is because you’ve tried therapy in the past and had a negative experience. It might be because you feel shame or embarrassment about entering therapy. And for others, the talking format of therapy is not a good fit.
